Now before I start with this please do not confuse Hemp seed with Marijuana. Yes, they are in the same family of plants, but hemp seed has very little to no THC, in fact, it is extremely high in essential fatty acids, it contains the perfect ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, ranking the highest in seeds on the earth. Usually, you find these essential fats in fish, such as salmon. This seed is extremely easy to digest and also has the essential fatty acid known as gamma-linolenic acid, which is a super anti-inflammatory agent. There are lots of great benefits to this tiny seed. If you would like to read up more on this and some other superfoods, I would recommend the book “Superfoods, by David Wolfe”. He is a bit extreme but exceptionally knowledgeable.
Hemp can actually be used for many other things as well as it grows very easily, and every part of the hemp plant can be used for something. Hemp is great for the environment. It grows fast, turn-over is quick and non-damaging its surrounding environment. Today you can buy hemp clothing, body care products, home construction products, hemp paper, hemp rope, hemp building materials and I am sure more than I can think of at this time.
So, now that I have given you a bit of information about this superfood, let’s get into some of my reasons, why I am using it and how. I first discovered this seed a couple of years ago through my schooling and David Wolfe. He is one of the educators at the Institute of Integrated Nutrition where I studied to become a health coach. We were encouraged to try new foods and experiment around with them, to see how we like them, how we can use them in our kitchen and also how our bodies reacted to them.
I have tried many other superfoods along the way, but Raw Hemp Seed is one of the few that is actually still in my pantry and I use on a regular basis. This little seed has so many great health benefits between its anti-inflammatory properties, it’s brain building fatty acids and the fact that it is easily digestible were some of the great reasons I was attracted to this seed. I was still in the middle of healing my gut, and to find something new to add to my diet with lots of great benefits without getting an upset stomach was just fantastic.
I like to use my power seeds in my hot oatmeal. I add them right at the end of cooking. I have added them to my salads, baked goods and my homemade granola. They are super easy, nutritious and quite universal to use. You can definitely use your imagination on these great seeds and add them to any dish that you would like to dress up or add extra nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties to at any time.
I buy my seeds at Guidos Market in Great Barrington or from Thrive market online. They are not too expensive, considering they are a superfood. A small container of about a little less than half a pound lasts quite some time, as I only use this seed by the tablespoon.
